Electoral Act Amendment: Buhari to assent to bill by Friday – Presidency sources

Barring any last-minute change, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to sign the long-awaited Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021, this Friday.

Authoritative  Presidency sources confirmed that the President would be performing his duty of assenting to the bill around 12pm.

Public anxiety had mounted, in the last few weeks, over President Buhari's delay in assenting to the re-amended bill, as some members of the public as well as some critical stakeholders have already concluded that he is withholding assent again. 

The National Assembly transmitted the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 to President Buhari on January 31, a second time, having reportedly revised the bill, which he withheld his assent to for some noted reasons.

However, the President has yet to assent to the re-amended bill more than 20 days after it was transmitted to him, though he constitutionally has a 30-day window within which he is mandated to either assent or state reasons for not doing so.

Sources close to the office of the President, however, revealed that arrangements had been finalized for the President to sign the amendment bill into law on Friday, finally putting all anxieties to rest.

The source, who spoke on conditions of anonymity, said “all these anxieties will disappear by Friday afternoon.

''He will be signing the bill around noon of that day.

 “I believe he has taken his time so that the Act can be as unassailable as much as possible.''

President Buhari had withheld his assent to the bill in November 2021, citing the cost of conducting direct primary elections, security challenges, and possible manipulation of electoral processes by political players as part of the reasons for his decision.

He, however, gave some conditions to give his assent, prompting the lawmakers to re-work the bill which initially led to the emergence of two versions from the green and red chambers of the assembly.

PARTY PRIMARIES: INEC Harps on compliance with the rules

The Independent National Electoral commission, INEC has reminded political parties to adhere strictly to the 14 items contained in the schedule of activities for the 2023 General Elections. A statement by INEC national commissioner for information, Festus Okoye expresses worry that no party has informed the commission of the date of its primary which begins from the 4th of April to 3rd June 2022. The statement adds that parties must adhere strictly to the principles of internal democracy, drawing from their constitutions, guidelines, the Electoral Act and other Regulations and Guidelines issued by the Commission. The electoral body maintains that parties' candidates for the 1,491 constituencies for which elections will be conducted in 2023 must emerge from democratic, transparent and valid primaries, in line with the provisions of Sections 29 and 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022. Osun 2022: Adeleke emerges PDP candidate

  Senator Ademola Adeleke Senator Ademola Adeleke has been declared the winner of the Osun PDP governorship primary election held at the Osogbo township stadium. The governorship election is scheduled to hold on July 16. The PDP primary, held at the 10,000 capacity Oshogbo stadium, was also contested by Dotun Babayemi. The primary election held amid allegation of bias and litigations which could have stalled the process. Senator Adeleke was also the PDP’s flagbearer in 2018 when he lost to incumbent Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress. POLIRENA however, observed that a parallel primary election by a faction of the party also held in the state capital.
