Sunday Igboho released from detention in Benin republic

Authorities in Benin republic have released Nigerian separatist leader, Sunday Adeyemo Popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

His spokesperson disclosed this according to a BBC website report.

Mr Igboho was arrested at a Benin airport in July 2021 alongside his wife on Nigeria's request, although his wife was released days later.

The couple was said to be headed for Germany where his wife is a citizen.

He was accused of entering Benin illegally and planning to cause trouble but he denied the charges.

The Nigerian authorities never made a formal extradition request.

In a statement on Monday, his spokesman said Mr Igboho was released to the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Banji Akintoye.

Details on his release are still sketchy.

Nigeria accuses Mr Igboho of stockpiling weapons, calling for the break-up of the country and inciting ethnic killings.

Mr Igboho is hailed as a hero by his supporters after calling for a Yoruba nation in the country's south-west.

He fled the country after a raid on his home by Nigeria's secret police in July 2021 where two of his associates were killed.

PARTY PRIMARIES: INEC Harps on compliance with the rules

The Independent National Electoral commission, INEC has reminded political parties to adhere strictly to the 14 items contained in the schedule of activities for the 2023 General Elections. A statement by INEC national commissioner for information, Festus Okoye expresses worry that no party has informed the commission of the date of its primary which begins from the 4th of April to 3rd June 2022. The statement adds that parties must adhere strictly to the principles of internal democracy, drawing from their constitutions, guidelines, the Electoral Act and other Regulations and Guidelines issued by the Commission. The electoral body maintains that parties' candidates for the 1,491 constituencies for which elections will be conducted in 2023 must emerge from democratic, transparent and valid primaries, in line with the provisions of Sections 29 and 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022. Osun 2022: Adeleke emerges PDP candidate

  Senator Ademola Adeleke Senator Ademola Adeleke has been declared the winner of the Osun PDP governorship primary election held at the Osogbo township stadium. The governorship election is scheduled to hold on July 16. The PDP primary, held at the 10,000 capacity Oshogbo stadium, was also contested by Dotun Babayemi. The primary election held amid allegation of bias and litigations which could have stalled the process. Senator Adeleke was also the PDP’s flagbearer in 2018 when he lost to incumbent Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress. POLIRENA however, observed that a parallel primary election by a faction of the party also held in the state capital.
